This course in short fiction is for people who have already had an introduction to fictional technique and, preferably, an additional course in creative writing. Students will generate and engage in their own writing projects. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Possible readings include texts by Edwidge Danticat, Julio Cortázar, Yoko Tawada, Haruki Murakami, Neel Mukherjee, Caryl Phillips, Sally Rooney, and Sigrid Nunez. (Readings will vary in each section and depending on the visitors to the Russell House Reading Series.)

Examinations and Assignments:
Two long stories and one revision
Two pieces of flash fiction
Various short writing assignments
Weekly typed critiques of student work
Craft essay
Oral presentation
(Assignments will vary in each section)

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Student Option Grading Mode: If planning to pursue the Creative Writing path in English, students should choose the graded option for this class to fulfill requirements.
Meetings with and readings by visiting writers will be an additional element of the course.
The application deadline is the Monday after the start of preregistration at 5:00 PM.

Application Process: Permission of instructor approval will be granted by the instructor during pre-registration through the Electronic Portfolio. In addition, please email hsawhney@wesleyan.edu the following in one document: a) 5 double-spaced pages of fiction b) a cover page that includes the following: your name, email address, class year, major (if any); the number of this course; some of your favorite writers and any other influences; a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your creative writing background. c) list the creative writing course(s) you have taken previous to this one. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich text format for your attachment, with the file name: "Last Name-First Initial" (e.g. Smith-J.docx). You will be notified electronically of the status of your application by November 15. Students who have missed this deadline may submit materials directly to hsawhney@wesleyan.edu in mid-January up to the week before classes begin, in case there are any last-minute openings.
Contributes to fulfillment of ENGL major requirements:
CW requirement, CW 300-level course, CW upper-level CW workshop, elective.
The English department highly recommends that students be enrolled in only one CW course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one CW course, the department requests that you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. By doing so you will be considerate of instructors and other students.

Readings will include short stories from Edward P Jones, Alice Munro, Jamel Brinkley, Nam Le, Mariana Enriquez, Yiyun Li and Amy Hempel; essays on craft and writing by Melissa Febos, Margot Livesey, Zadie Smith, Ursula K Le Guin, Matthew Salesses, Italo Calvino and Robert Hass |
