This course in short fiction is for people who have already had an introduction to fictional technique and, preferably, an additional course in creative writing. Students will generate and engage in their own writing projects. Readings will be tailored somewhat to the interests of the class. |

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Students must provide copies of their own stories to their classmates at least a week in advance of the discussion of them. There will be a variety of texts by published authors of fiction as well.

Examinations and Assignments: Short exercises, three short stories including one revision, two short craft papers, weekly written critique of student work; portfolio of all written work at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Heavy workshop component; students will make copies of their own work and distribute them to the class at least a week in advance of its being discussed.
Students are also required to attend several events per semester with visiting writers (usually scheduled on Wednesday afternoons at 4:15 and evenings at 8:00 p.m.). To apply to this course, please submit 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably fiction). Please also submit a cover page in two sections: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in fiction writing, or other creative writing background. 3) If you are applying to more than one POI creative writing course, you must indicate your order of preference. The application deadline is Monday, November 4, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. Please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to damartin@wesleyan.edu. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich-text-format for your attachment. You will be notified electronically if you have been admitted (or not) to the course. Students may not take this course and another creative writing course concurrently.
