Fiction by authors such as, Angela Carter, Lydia Davis, Amy Hempel, Mary Gaitskill, Jhumpa Lahiri, Aleksandar Hemon, Franz Kafka, Jamaica Kincaid, and others.

Examinations and Assignments: Responses to assigned readings, occasional exercises, two short stories, one revision, and a final presentation of work. Attendance at every class required. There is a workshop component to this course so participating in class discussions is essential. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students will also be required to attend fiction readings (usually 2-3 per semester). |

Johnson, Denis, JESUS' SON Munro, Alice, THE BEGGAR MAID As well as a coursepack with stories by David Foster Wallace, Andre Dubus, Nam Le, Mary Gaitskill, Susan Minot, Charlie D'Ambrosio, Raymond Carver, and others. |
Examinations and Assignments: Students will be responsible for completing in-class writing exercises each week, as well as four longer homework assignments, two critical responses to story collections, and two complete short stories. Students will also be responsible for short critiques of manuscripts from their peers. |
