This introduction to the elements of fiction and a range of authors is for students who want to write and, through writing, increase their understanding and appreciation of a variety of short stories. |

Students will read stories by James Baldwin, Alice Munro, Junot Diaz, Carmen Machado, Annie Proulx, and other writers.

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will submit two short stories to the workshop. They will write one revision as a final project. They will complete five short writing assignments. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Please note: The bulk of instruction for this course will be held online, though on-campus students will participate in several in-person sessions with their instructor.
Students are also required to attend 2-3 events per semester with visiting writers (these are scheduled on Wednesday afternoons and evenings; Q & A sessions at 4:30 and readings at 6:00 p.m.).
It is highly recommended that students be enrolled in only one Creative Writing course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one Creative Writing course, we request you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. Please be serious about your choice for the consideration of instructors and other students.
Classes of '21 & '22: This course contributes to the Creative Writing and Theory & Literary Forms concentrations of the English major.
Class of 2023 and beyond: This course fulfills the Creative Writing concentration of the English major. |

Examinations and Assignments:
--Reading will consist of one chapter from the textbook per week, and at least one story from the anthology for each class.
--A weekly informal journal as well as at least one writing exercise submitted by Monday at midnight.
--A freewrite journal that students will work on during the semester and will be submitted the last day of class.
--We'll be writing two stories, one flash fiction piece with a rewrite that will be due the week after Thanksgiving and a longer story of 7-12 pages with a rewrite due the Sunday after our last class.
--There will be a few small group workshops as well as a bigger workshop during the second half of the semester for which students have to write a 2-page critique for each participant's story and post them on a discussion board.
--Each student has to pick one story from the anthology and prepare a video presentation in which they talk about how the author employed craft elements in the piece. These will be posted for the whole class and there will be a discussion board in which each student has to make at least one post and reply to at least two other students' posts.
