Until the late 1960s, the word diaspora applied to only three communities of dispersion: Jewish, Armenian, and Greek. The first was considered the paradigmatic case. In the past three decades, nationalism has persisted while transnationalism and globalization have emerged as new concepts and phenomena that have altered the way we think, both about nations and about many dispersed peoples once known as minorities, ethnicities, migrants, exiles, etc. Many of these have been renamed diasporas by some of their own artists, intellectuals and political leaders, or by scholars. This course will introduce students to earlier and current ways of thinking and writing about diasporas in the contexts of transnationalism and globalization. |
