Seeking the Land of the Rising Sun: Introduction to Premodern Japanese History and Culture
HIST 260
Fall 2024
Section: 01

A survey of Japanese civilization from prehistory to the mid-19th century. This course examines premodern Japanese history and culture in chronological order, introducing important events and individuals, prominent literary and artistic works, and recurring themes across the ages. It emphasizes the importance of understanding premodern history and culture in order to understand Japan's present. We will also explore the definition and boundaries of Japan itself, delving into how the peoples and cultures across the Japanese archipelago interacted and coalesced into the foundation of what we recognize today as the nation of Japan. In addition to the main textbook, the reading assignments incorporate a significant number of primary sources, ranging from official proclamations and religious texts to literature and private correspondence.
