Members of this seminar will focus on the creative non-fiction essay in a variety of genres, with the principal focus being on memoir and the personal essay. Using the techniques and strategies of addressing an audience (telling), along with the creation of character, atmosphere, and structure (storytelling), students will practice producing clear and distinctive statements of their experiences and views. |

Examinations and Assignments: Students will be expected to write a great deal. This means completing weekly writing assignments and informal written analyses of assigned readings, and revising work on assignments from previous weeks as necessary. In addition, students will complete three polished pieces, 6-8 pages in length. The final project will be an expanded version of one of these three pieces. There will be no examinations. Grades will be based equally on classroom participation and the completion and quality of written work. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students should be willing to share their work in peer-editing and in guided workshops. Attendance is strictly required. Any student with more than three unexcused absences may be dropped from the course at any point during the semester. Any student who does not come to the first class meeting may, in accordance with EPC rules, be dropped from the course. |
