Course Cluster and Certificates: Disability Studies |
Beginning American Sign Language II will provide a continuation of the work done in LANG190. The course will cover grammatical and linguistic material in some depth, as well as teach additional vocabulary. There will also be a focus on students' use of the language in class to improve their conversational abilities. The course will also introduce students to deaf culture and the signing community and will include ethnographic and analytical readings related to culture, linguistics, and interpretation. |

Examinations and Assignments:
The activities in the classroom are highly interactive to facilitate and support the acquisition of skills in ASL.
The three exams will be based on the following modes of communication: Interpretive (receptive skills for comprehension), Presentational (expressive skills for production), and Interpersonal (interactive skills for conversation).
There are also six quizzes on basic receptive skills, as well as knowledge on ASL language and grammar. As for the book reading, there will be written assignments and a discussion in class. The platform True Way ASL includes video material, homework assignments, and classroom activities. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Available tutoring and mandatory weekly sessions with the Course Assistant(s). Teaching Apprentice(s) will assist in class and may help students in their progressions. Due to the nature of the video assignments, we will use Flip and Google Classroom, as well as several other resources, such as YouTube, Vimeo, Kahoot. |
