Introduction to South Indian Music

This course will introduce students to the cornerstones of South Indian Music, melody (raga) and rhythm (tala). Along with lectures and readings in the history and theory of Karnatak music, students will also learn rudimentary exercises in singing and spoken rhythms. Students will regularly perform these exercises during class. Through a listening component, students will also learn to identify important ragas (melodic modes).
