Course Cluster: Southern Asia Studies |
This course will introduce students to the cornerstones of South Indian Music, melody (raga) and rhythm (tala). Along with lectures and readings in the history and theory of Karnatak music, students will also learn rudimentary exercises in singing and spoken rhythms. Students will regularly perform these exercises during class. Through a listening component, students will also learn to identify important ragas (melodic modes). |

Examinations and Assignments: There will be periodic quizzes on the lecture material, readings, and listening examples. Students will also be given exercises in singing and spoken rhythms, which they will be expected to practice daily. They will perform these assignments in every class. The final will consist of a written portion, based on the lectures and readings, a listening section, and a performed portion, drawn from the daily exercises. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: This course is intended as a gateway to the other courses in South Indian music. As such, there is no specific prerequisite. However, prospective students will be expected to exhibit an appropriate level of musical aptitude. The ability to carry a tune and keep steady rhythm is necessary. Preference will be given to students who wish to pursue further study of South Indian vocal, instrumental or drumming courses. |
