This course will introduce students to one of the world's great musical traditions, one that has been part of Wesleyan's renowned World Music Program for more than 60 years. Students will learn beginning performance techniques in melody (raga) and rhythm (tala), the cornerstones of South Indian music. Through a listening component, they will also learn to identify important ragas (melodic modes). Lectures will cover a wide range of topics, including karnatak (classical) music, temple and folk traditions, music in South Indian film, and pop music. Readings and lectures will also provide the historical and cultural context for this rich and diverse musical world and will prepare students for the fullest possible enjoyment of the annual Navaratri Festival in October. |

Examinations and Assignments:
There will be periodic quizzes on the lecture material, readings, and listening examples. Students will also be given exercises in singing and spoken rhythms, which they will be expected to practice daily. A paper on the annual Navaratri Festival will constitute the mid-term exam. The final will consist of a written portion, based on the lectures and readings, a listening section, and a performed portion, drawn from the daily exercises. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is intended as a gateway to the other courses in South Indian music and an introduction the World Music program. There is no specific prerequisite, although the ability to carry a tune and keep steady rhythm is helpful. Students will have the opportunity to attend several concerts of Indian music during the Navaratri Festival in October, a Wesleyan tradition for more than forty years. |
