The Collegium Musicum (literally "company of musicians") is a performance ensemble dedicated to exploring and performing the diverse European repertories of medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Emphasis is given to the study of musical styles, performance practices, vocal independence (holding a line), healthy voice training, and musicianship. Students investigate various cultural aspects of the production of music, including primary sources, acoustics, and cultural heritage.
In spring 2023, we take the Collegium to Ireland over Spring break as part of Wesleyan's Course Embedded Study Abroad (CESA) initiative. Most of the costs for the trip will be covered by Wesleyan, although students who are not on financial aid will need to pay a flat fee of $1,500 to cover flights, ground transport, lodging, entry fees, and most meals; the CESA does not involve any additional costs for students who are on financial aid. Please contact the Study Abroad Office or Prof. Alden with any questions about this component.
There will be a slight reduction in the taught hours on campus to accommodate the hours of instruction in Ireland, where students will work with a range of choral directors in diverse settings. As well as visiting historic sites dating back to the Stone Age, Viking, medieval, and modern eras, students will undertake fieldwork, attend performances of traditional Irish music ("trad"), and gain a basic understanding of indigenous and hybrid musical practices (e.g., céilí dances) and instruments (uilleann pipes, tin whistle, bodhrán drum, and more). This site-specific work will enrich future performances on the Wesleyan campus. |
