The texts set by composers such as Tallis and Byrd offered the persecuted recusant (Catholic) community of 16th-century England hope of redemption in the face of the very real threat of death. This performance class will offer students the opportunity to learn about the plight of the recusants and the solace offered by music. Several of the works studied with include metaphorical references to the Babylonian captivity and the destruction of Jerusalem. Among the works performed will be Tallis Lamentations, Byrd, Ave verum corpus, and Byrd, Ne Irascaris Domine. Emphasis will be given to the study of musical style and to giving historically-informed performances. The process of ¿recreating¿ this music will involve investigating its original cultural setting. Participants will, accordingly, work with primary source materials, including facsimiles of musical manuscripts, as well as modern editions. |
