The Collegium Musicum is a performance ensemble dedicated to exploring and performing the diverse vocal and instrumental repertories of the medieval, renaissance, and baroque periods of European music history. Emphasis is given to the study of musical styles, performance practices, vocal independence (holding a line), healthy voice training, and musicianship. The class explores various cultural aspects of the production of music, looking at primary source materials in collaboration with manuscript experts and Wesleyan Special Collections. The online version of the Collegium Musicum (literally "company of musicians") will provide opportunities for creative teamwork and imaginative problem-solving, to arrive at new ways of joining voices. The course joins the long history of communal song, implementing community vocal work as a resource to tackle current health challenges and loneliness. Outreach projects will focus on singing with and for seniors with internet access. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Assessment is based on completion of readings, listening assignments, mandatory attendance at rehearsals and performances, individual progress as singers, musicianship development, and creative engagement with technology.

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students who are taking advantage of pre-registration are required to contact the instructor to arrange an interview/audition meeting as soon as they register for the class. Only returning ensemble members may pre-register without an interview/audition. Students registering for any remaining places in the Drop/Add period need to audition during Drop/Add.
AUDITIONS:
Students should email Prof. Jane Alden (jalden01@wesleyan.edu) with a statement of suitability for/interest in the course by February 5th. Include details of their background in choral singing and voice work in general. The Professor will assess the student's suitability and help them prepare for an online audition on February 8th, if deemed necessary. Any background or interest in manuscripts and European history will be an advantage, due to the nature of the materials that the group will sing.
This course may be repeated. Undergraduate students may take this course two times for a grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation.
