The Collegium Musicum (literally "company of musicians") is a vocal performance ensemble dedicated to exploring and performing the diverse European repertories of medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Emphasis is given to the study of musical styles, performance practices, vocal independence, healthy singing, and musicianship. Students investigate various cultural aspects of the production of music, including primary sources, acoustics, and cultural heritage. Outreach projects include singing with and for seniors. |

Weekly listening assignments and some selected readings appropriate to the chosen repertoire and voice production.

Examinations and Assignments:
Assessment is based on close study of listening assignments, mandatory attendance at all rehearsals (class and sectionals) and performances, individual progress as singers, musicianship development, and creative engagement. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course may be repeated. Students who have cultivated their expertise singing in this group have found it has opened doors to many other opportunities.
Returning ensemble members can pre-register without an interview/audition. New students can audition during Drop/Add or preregistration (for remaining seats).
AUDITIONS: Permission of Instructor (POI) is awarded to students who email Prof. Jane Alden (jalden01@wesleyan.edu) a statement indicating their background in singing and voice work more broadly, and any past experience of/interest in inter-generational or therapeutic music-making. Undergraduate students may take the course as many times as they like and can receive a grade for two semesters and credit towards graduation up to four times. Graduate students are also welcome to audition for this class. |
