L'Amour et l'Obstacle

This course will study a variety of plays, poetry, and novels spanning the centuries, in each of which, and each in its particular way, love, faced with an obstacle to its realization, either proves or refutes the proverbial dictum, AMOR OMNIA VINCIT, and the poetic assertion of Emily Dickinson: "That love is all there is/Is all we know of love..." |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Writing Students will interpret, speak and write about literary texts in French belonging to different genres (poetry, drama, novel) and different periods (from the Middle Ages to the 20th century).

Students will choose one of the optional readings on which to write an essay.

Examinations and Assignments: Classroom presentations. 5 or 6 pp. paper on works not studied in class. Brief final exercise. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: While any students who has completed FREN 215 (with a minimum grade of B) or has placed out of FREN 215 through the placement test may sign up for this course, it is an introductory course intended for students who have just completed FREN 215 or nor taken more than one course in French beyond 215 and not yet studied abroad in a French-speaking country. Readings, written assignments and class discussions will be in French. Only COL students may take this course for credit. All others must take it for a letter grade. |
