The emergence of the feminine voice in literature is one of the key signs of the democratization that Spanish culture has undergone during the last few decades of the 20th century. We will seek to gain a better understanding of this process by studying a selection of the best known narratives written by Spanish women between 1970 and 2000. In doing so, we will focus especially on such matters as the narratological strategies adopted by women writers and the socio-political context as it relates to female literary production in Spain. We will also explore the historical origins of Spanish feminism, comparing and contrasting it to North-American feminism. |

Examinations and Assignments: Short response paper for each of the five novels analyzed in class: in their analyzes of each novels students will bring to bear feminist theories studies in secondary readings. A final (longer) essay in which students will demonstrate their ability to synthesize the main points covered throughout the semester. Along with these written assignments, regular attendance, preparation and active participation in classroom discussions will constitute an essential basis for evaluation. Working in tandem with a classmate, students will also be expected to lead class discussions occasionally. In doing so, they will be expected to prepare a summary of the day's reading and submit discussion questions to the professor in advance. |
