Crosslisting:
AMST 278, LAST 279 |
This course examines the canonical literary texts produced by and about Latino groups in the United States. Through close readings, we will trace the historically changing ways in which, from the 19th century onward, various Latino communities have imagined their identities both within and across the national borders of the United States and Latin America. We will pay special attention to the roles that colonialism, political and economic displacement, immigration, assimilation, and nationalism have played in the shaping of contemporary discourses of identity. The course will consider a variety of genres - from novels to poetry to film - in order to investigate both the commonalities and the historical differences between these ethnic groups. |
