This course undertakes a multidisciplinary study and choreographic research approach to works of Alexander Von Humboldt (father of botany) and the anthropocene. Dance undertakes the study of the body as an ecologogical premise. Humboldt studied voraciously variant eco-systems (plant, animal, human) and noted their "interconnectedness." He theorized, and empirically showed, that the geological and fossil record provides us with concrete "visual" evidence of nature's own tangible intelligence and advocated for its protection on the basis that preserving nature was preserving human and planetary intelligence--a plea to the "godliness" of the objects of nature. We will thematically examine the tensions and counter-tensions between visualism (empiricism) and post-visual (sub-atomic) choreographying in science and art.
We will read from and about Deleuze and Guattari, dance anthropology, ecological history, neurology, music and architectural history, post-modern and modern choreography, and about the larger themes of the philosophical history of the body across cultures. Our culminating research will result in the construction and performance of a multimedia performance. The study of ritual making and ritual reading will be important to developing an epistemology of the ecological body in performance. |
