This course examines choreography and its performance as an embodied text. Students will research a theme-specific topic and participate in the creation of a contemporary work under the direction, guidance, and mentorship of a faculty choreographer. This class will serve as a laboratory for experimenting with the performance techniques and evolving methodologies of the teaching artist, preparing the student for the practice of embodied research. The course culminates in the performance of the work developed during the semester of study. Special topics: "Hortus Conclusus, The Enclosed Garden." |

Examinations and Assignments: Daily attendance, assigned readings, and projects specific to the research theme undertaken by the faculty artist developing the work. Required attendance at all technical rehearsals and field trips. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: A minimum of an introductory level studio technique in any tradition required. Students will be evaluated according to their ability to contribute to the collective research of the group and for the quality of participation throughout the creative process. Creative problem solving, memorization of material, rhythmic and spatial awareness, and performance skills necessary to the development of a mature artist will guide all work undertaken in class. Theatre, music, visual arts majors, and athletes who are interested in the crossroads between physical theatre and performance are welcome to request permission of the instructor.
Undergraduates may take this course up to two times for a letter grade and up to four times for credit towards graduation. |
