Repertory and Performance: Bharata Natyam
DANC 378
Spring 2012
| Section:

|
This course may be repeated for credit. |
This course focuses on the multiple applications of the Navarasa--nine colossal moods (love, disgust, compassion, valour, humour, fear, wonder, anger, and peace), drawing from neo-classical dance traditions in India, especially Bharatanatyam. Students will be exposed to dynamic and lyrical movement possibilities from 19th century colonial South India to 21st century global India. Students will perform a specially created repertory piece, NINE, where the Navarasa will be mapped out from both classical and contemporary perspectives. NINE will be performed twice (as two different versions) over the semester as part of the Spring Faculty Concert on March 2 and 3 and as part of the Worlds of Dance concert at the end of the semester. NINE is a dynamic kinaesthetic Bharatanatyam based work which will alternate between complex rhythmic dance and poetic textual interpretation. |
