The Roman Empire has been associated with the concept of cultural decadence from the emergence of the term in the 18th century. Though the Romans themselves did not use the term, the idea of decadence was far from foreign to them. This course will draw on a variety of Roman literary sources and on modern critical and artistic reflections on Roman decadence to explore the idea of decadence as shaped by the Romans. |
