Junior Colloquium: African American Women, Sex, Crime, and Punishment

This course explores a diverse group of African American women who created alternative niches for themselves within the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, we will study the lives and experiences of black women who participated in sex work and extralegal and criminal activities. Grounded in history, this course will also consider what these actions and behaviors reveal about black female agency and the ways that the state sought to regulate shifting notions of race, gender, and sexuality through the criminal justice system. |
