This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of one of the most important political movements of the 20th century, Freedom Summer, which took place in Mississippi in 1964 and that directly and indirectly led to numerous political developments for the rest of the Sixties and beyond. In this course, we will take a close look at the political events leading up to and developing from Freedom Summer in 1964. We will trace the historical and political trajectory of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to see how Freedom Summer marked a crucial transitional moment in the career of that organization. We will explore the details of the institutions that were organized for that summer--voter registration drives, Freedom Schools, symbolic Freedom Votes, and the creation of an alternative political party, Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP). And then we will look at the political events that culminated at the end of that summer during the Democratic National Convention and how those events led to specific political developments within SNCC. Finally, we will look at how those students who engaged in political work during Freedom Summer were transformed and what paths their lives took after that summer. |
