Tonal Harmony
MUSC 201
Spring 2026
Section: 01

This course builds on the foundations established in Materials and Design, with an expanded focus on the analysis of Western European music from the Common Practice period (c. 1700-1900). Through guided listening, written analytical exercises, and in-class discussion, students will develop a deeper understanding of harmony, melody, and formal structures characteristic of the late Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic traditions. Weekly lab sessions emphasize the practical application of these concepts through sight-singing, dictation, and keyboard work, with sustained use of solfège to strengthen aural and theoretical fluency.
