In this course, we will be guided by contemporary poets who create at the interstices of critical, creative, visual, and performative methodologies. We will study poets who are also performers. Poets who are witches and diviners. Poets that work across the sciences. Poets who are activists. Poets who find inspiration deep in the archives. Poets who are installation artists. And, together, while always keeping language close, we will allow our practice-based enquires to help us curate, complicate, and develop our own interdisciplinary bodies of work. The class will culminate in a series of poetry projects spanning fields. |

Examinations and Assignments:
to: Bi-weekly poetry submissions, dedication to a constructive artistic community, one oral presentation, a poetics essay, and a final interdisciplinary book-arts project or performance piece that consists of (or is in correspondence with) 15-20 pages of edited creative work. |

Note: The department chair will oversee applications until instructor is hired.
Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students must also make every effort to attend the readings by visiting poets (Q & A sessions at 4:15 on Wednesday afternoons; readings at 8:00 p.m.).
Application Process: (1) Go to the Creative Writing page of the English Department website at: http://www.wesleyan.edu/english/Writing%20.html and complete the online application. (2)Submit the following to Liz Tinker at etinker@wesleyan.edu: 5 double-spaced pages of poetry with a cover page in two sections: (a) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; (b) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your creative writing background. The application deadline is Tuesday, April 4 at 4:00 PM. Please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment with the subject heading "POI Application". Please use either Microsoft Word or rich text format for your attachment, with the file name: "Last Name-First Initial-Course Number" (e.g. Smith-J-ENGL336.docx! ). You will be notified electronically of the status of your application during preregistration. Students who have missed this deadline may submit materials to etinker@wesleyan.edu by August 28, 2017, at 5 p.m., in case there are any last-minute openings.
Students may NOT take this course and another English creative writing workshop concurrently.
This course contributes to the Theory & Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations of the English major. |
