How does poetry express what, at first, might seem inexpressible? In this project-based workshop, we will explore this question in an attempt to say the unsayable. Guided by immersive writing and reading experiments into language's limits, students will craft a cohesive, project-centered body of poems while cultivating an engaged daily writing practice. |

Examinations and Assignments:
There will be bi-weekly presentations on the literature we read, as well as class discussions and workshops of one another's creative work. The class will culminate in a final book-arts project that consists of 10-15 pages of edited poems as well as a 4-8 page reflective essay. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students must also make every effort to attend the readings by visiting poets.
Application Deadline: Monday, April 6 by 5:00 PM
Application Process: (1) Go to the Creative Writing page of the English Department website at: http://www.wesleyan.edu/english/Writing%20.html, click on the Google Form link and complete the online application. (2) At the bottom of the form please upload the following in one document: 5 single-spaced pages of poetry. Please also submit a cover page that includes the following: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), the number of this course, some of your favorite writers and any other influences 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your creative writing background. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich text format for your attachment, with the file name: "Last Name-First Initial-Course Number" (e.g. Smith-J-ENGL336.docx). You will be notified electronically of the status of your application by the end of the Planning Period.
It is highly recommended that students be enrolled in only one Creative Writing course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one Creative Writing course, we request you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. Please be serious about your choice for the consideration of instructors and other students.
Classes of '21 & '22: This course contributes to the Theory & Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations of the English major.
Class of '23 and beyond: This course fulfills the Creative Writing requirement and contributes to the Creative Writing path of the English major.
Fall 2020: Student Option grading mode is available. However a grade of B+ or higher is required for students planning to pursue the Creative Writing concentration or path in the English major. |
