This seminar-style course will focus on the reading and constructive discussion of poetry submitted by members of the workshop. It will include an ongoing discussion of poetic structure, reading assignments in contemporary poetry, and a variety of writing experiments. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Four brief prose response papers; weekly poetry submissions; constructive oral critiques; and a 10-15 page collection of poetry. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Regular class attendance and participation are essential.
To apply for this course, please submit 5-7 pages of your poetry. Please also submit a cover page in two sections: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences, and 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history and/or interest in writing poetry.
There will be two deadlines for submission of materials, one in late spring and the other in August. Spring submissions (hard copies, not emails or faxes) are due by May 1, 2009 at 4:00pm to Lix Tinker, Department of English, 294 High Street. You will be notified of the preliminary class list by the end of May. Enrollment will take place at the beginning of Drop/Add.
If you are applying for the course in August, please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to ewillis@wesleyan.edu no later than 5pm on Friday, August 28, 2009. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich-text-format for your attachment. You may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial. |
