This seminar-style course will focus on the reading and constructive discussion of poetry submitted by members of the workshop. It will include an ongoing discussion of poetic structure, reading assignments in contemporary poetry, and a variety of writing experiments. |

Examinations and Assignments: Weekly or bi-weekly poetry submissions; constructive oral and written peer critiques; three brief response essays; and a final portfolio of 10-15 pages of poems written and revised this semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students are also required to attend 3 readings by visiting writers (usually scheduled on Wednesday evenings, with Q & A sessions on Wednesday afternoons) during the semester.
To apply to this course, please submit 5 double-spaced pages of poetry. Please also submit a cover page in two sections: 1) your name, email address, year in school major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences; 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your creative writing background. The first application deadline is April 2, 2010 at 5 p.m. Students who have missed this deadline and would still like to apply to the workshop may submit materials to the instructor electronically by Friday September 3, at 5 p.m., in case there are any last-minute openings. Please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to ewillis@wesleyan.edu! using either Microsoft word (.doc NOT .docx) or rich-text format (.rtf) for your attachment. You will be notified electronically if you have been admitted to the course. Students may not take this course and another creative writing workshop concurrently. |
