This course introduces students to the fundamentals of writing poetry and to some of the major issues in contemporary poetics. Emphasis will fall on reading and discussing contemporary poetry, writing in both open and closed forms, working with structural elements beyond traditional poetic forms, and developing a methodology for critical discussion. |

A wide range of poetry assignments and three 2-page critical responses. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students are also required to attend Q & A sessions and poetry readings by visiting writers (2-3 per semester, scheduled on Wednesday afternoons and evenings at 4:15 and at 8:00 p.m.). Enrolled students must adjust their schedules accordingly. Students may not take this course and a creative writing workshop concurrently.
