This course introduces students to the fundamentals of writing poetry and to some of the major issues in contemporary poetics. Emphasis will fall on reading and discussing contemporary poetry, writing in both open and closed forms, working with structural elements beyond traditional poetic forms, and developing a methodology for critical discussion. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Biweekly poetry submissions; constructive oral and written peer critiques; a final book arts project consisting of a 10-page collection of revised poems and a reflective essay. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students will also be required to attend poetry readings (usually 2-3 per semester). This course contributes to the English major Theory and Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations. |
