This course introduces students to the fundamentals of writing poetry and to some of the major issues in contemporary poetics. Emphasis will fall on reading and discussing contemporary poetry, writing in both open and closed forms, working with structural elements beyond traditional poetic forms, and developing a methodology for critical discussion. |

Student Option Grading Mode: If planning to pursue the Creative Writing path in English, students should choose the ¿graded¿ option for this class to fulfill requirements. Students will also be required to attend poetry readings (usually 2-3 per semester). It is highly recommended that students be enrolled in only one Creative Writing course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one Creative Writing course, we request you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. Please be serious about your choice for the consideration of instructors and other students. This course contributes to the English major Theory and Literary Forms and Creative Writing concentrations. Class of 2023 and beyond: This course fulfills the Creative Writing requirement and contributes to the fulfillment of the Creative Writing path of the English major. If planning to pursue the Creative Writing path in English, students should choose the ¿graded¿ option for this class to fulfill requirements |
