This course introduces students to the fundamentals of writing poetry and to some of the major issues in contemporary poetics. Emphasis will fall on reading and discussing contemporary poetry, writing in both open and closed forms, working with structural elements beyond traditional poetic forms, and developing a methodology for critical discussion. |

Student Option Grading Mode: If planning to pursue the Creative Writing path in English, students should choose the graded option for this class to fulfill requirements. Students will also be required to attend poetry readings (usually 2-3 per semester). Contributes to fulfillment of ENG major requirements: CW requirement, CW path course (but not 300-level course or upper-level workshop), elective The English department highly recommends that students be enrolled in only one CW course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one CW course, the department requests that you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. By doing so you will be considerate of instructors and other students.
