Techniques of Poetry: Prosody and Poetic Form
ENGL 216
Fall 2024
| Section:
01
|
When to write prose and when to write poetry -- what is the occasion for one and not the other? Is it verse that makes a poem? In this introductory poetry course, we will study forms that flirt with prose while remaining, ultimately, poetry -- in all its heightened language, figuration, and foregrounding of white space. These forms include the prose poem, zuihitsu, haibun, as well as verse poems. The class culminates in an intensive study on various schools of thought around the line length and line break. |
