In this course, we will read contemporary poetry focusing on the work written in the period 1980 to the present, by understanding diverse poetic roots and routes through American literature, multi-culturalism, post 9/11 and environmental anxieties to an art that speaks to the present. We will sharpen our analytic skills and practice close reading and annotation to build our capacities to write responses to poetic texts as literature and cultural expression. |

Readings will include:
Donald Allen, ed. THE NEW AMERICAN POETRY
Melissa Kwasny, ed. TOWARD THE OPEN FIELD
four individual collections of poetry
and a coursepack, which consists of poems by a dozen (more or less) poets including Rae Armantrout, Anne Lauterbach, Ed Roberson, Harryette Mullen, Claudia Rankine, Terrance Hayes, Alice Notley, Charles Bernstein, Miyung Mi Kim, Cathy Park Hong, Rodrigo Toscano and others. Essays and background readings, both the essential and optional, will also be online.

Examinations and Assignments:
A midterm essay of 5-7 pages, a final essay of 8-10 pages, several 1-page assignments. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students must make every effort to attend events related to the course material outside of the regular class schedule. At least two readings by visiting poets will be scheduled for a Wednesday Q & A 4:15-5:00 pm, followed by a reading at 8:00 pm.
This course contributes to the Theory & Literary Forms and American Literature concentrations and counts as a genre-focused course in the Creative Writing concentration of the English major. |
