This course offers an introduction to the cultural production of African Americans from the mid-18th century to the present, with an emphasis on poetry and fiction. Beginning with slave narratives and early poetry, we will consider issues of genre, literary traditions, and historical context while gaining experience in reading and analyzing literary texts. |

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, poetry from Phillis Wheatley through the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary poets; fiction by Langston Hughes, Charles Chesnutt, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, William Melvin Kelley, Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright and others.

Two five-page papers, a midterm and final examination. |

Students are expected to attend class and have assignments completed on the day they appear on the syllabus. This course meets the English Department's Literature of Difference requirement for the English major. |
