MATH 163
Spring 2017 not offered
|
This course aims to introduce students to some of the great ideas of mathematics. We will investigate a variety of topics in number theory, set theory, probability, game theory, topology, and geometry. One major goal is to give students a chance to "think like a mathematician." Thus, students will be encouraged to explore and to discover mathematical patterns and ideas for themselves. We will also gain an understanding of what constitutes a mathematical proof and why mathematicians are so insistent about them. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Assignments will focus on two processes: doing mathematics and writing about mathematics. Students will also give presentations and provide critiques of others' presentations. Attendance will be required.
The level of difficulty of the mathematics will be comparable to that of standard first and second year courses in the calculus sequence. However, the subject matter is different. MATH163 does NOT satisfy any prerequisite for students planning to major in the physical sciences, and it does NOT meet the calculus expectations for students planning a career in medicine. |
