European colonial rule came to most of Africa during the late nineteenth century. Africans engaged with colonial policies in complex ways, sometimes rejecting European interventions outright, at other times taking advantage of social and economic change. This course examines the colonial and post-independence eras from African and European perspectives, covering colonial administration, critiques of imperialism, Pan-Africanism, postcolonial conflicts, development, and democratization.
