This course is a first-year, elementary I course in modern standard Arabic (MSA) that will introduce students to the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In this level, class will focus on speaking as an effective way of learning (speak it to learn it). Students will learn Arabic letters and their sounds, write and create basic words and sentences, and be able to converse basic dialogues comfortably in the target language. Oral drills and speaking activities will be done in the classroom, and the class will be conducted fully in Arabic. The class meets three times a week with a mandatory additional 50-minute speaking drill session for all students. |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy This course will focus on developing proficiency in Arabic by addressing all skills of language learning: reading, listening, reading and writing. Throughout class activities, assignments and with the use of authentic materials, students will gain an understanding of new cultural concepts and values which will help them develop intercultural literacy.

Examinations and Assignments: Weekly in-class diagnostic tests will be given in a form of short written quizzes, dictation and spelling, speaking practices and listening exercises; a mid-term and final exams will be given in the assigned dates. In addition, home work assignments are given three times a week. |
