This course is designed to allow advanced students to conduct supervised research in the area of the cognitive psychology of reasoning. Working as a team with the instructor and other members of the research group, students will undertake a semester-long experimental research project on a topic in reasoning. The class will meet in a weekly seminar to read and discuss research articles, to formulate plans for studies, and to provide updates on experiments being conducted by members of the group. |
Essential Capabilities:
Designing, Creating, and Realizing The goal of this course is for a research team to design and implement a research study that tests a novel hypothesis. Towards this goal, each class period is devoted to brainstorming, developing, critiquing, revising, refining, and ultimating implementing and executing the design idea. The final project for the class is to produce a scientific report describing the work.

Reading lists will be designed for each project. Students will read background chapters and recent journal articles over the course of the term.

Examinations and Assignments: Drafts of sections of a research report will be completed throughout the term. A final version of the entire research project in journal-article format will be due at the end of the term. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: This is a course in the study area of cognitive psychology. It is ideally taken in the sophomore or junior year by students with background in cognitive psychology, quantitative research methods, and statistics who wish to get involved in reasoning and decision making research, possibly leading to a thesis. To be considered for the course, please send an email including your year, (intended) major, relevant course experience, and reason for your interest in this course to the professor (apatalano@) at the start of the preregistration planning period. Initial decisions will be announced by email before the last day of the planning period. |
