This seminar is required for all senior sociocultural anthropology majors who intend to write honors theses and is very strongly recommended for those writing senior essays. It is designed to enable students to pursue individual research projects in a group context and with attention to debates on the nature of anthropological interpretation. Each student gives a series of presentations on her/his own research project to the group; equally important is engaging with and offering constructive criticism of the projects presented by others. |

Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation
Students develop skills in the interpretation of socio-cultural phenomena through analysis of projects based on fieldwork and/or library research. Class discussions will also engage with issues in the ethics of anthropological research.

Most readings will be student-selected, on the basis of their individual projects. A few readings may be assigned to the class as a whole over the semester.

Examinations and Assignments:
A weekly research journal, class presentations, mid-semester paper, and a project abstract and a draft of a thesis chapter or essay by the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course substitutes for and should be taken in place of a fall semester thesis/essay tutorial (ANTH409). |
