Approaches to Acting

This course is designed to explore the actor's instrument--specifically, the vocal, physical, and imaginative tools necessary for the creative work of the actor. Students will examine the creative process practically and theoretically, through theater games, exercises, improvisation, and text work. The course explores a variety of traditional and contemporary approaches to acting, covering techniques rooted in the works of Constantin Stanislavsky and those developed in response to his theories, including Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Viola Spolin, Anne Bogart and Viewpoints, and David Mamet and Practical Aesthetics. This class is intended for second-, third-, and fourth-year students interested in a deep introduction to acting. First-year students and sophomores who are potential theater majors are advised to take THEA245 in the spring semester. |
