From the Lowell, Massachusetts "mill girls" who banded together and turned out to protest slashed wages in 1834 to President Reagan's summary firing of striking air controllers in 1981, U.S. labor history has been marked by dramatic events. This course will explore that history, including the nature of work and working conditions; the vast variety of people who have labored in this country; the union movement; the influence of race, ethnicity, gender, and religion in industrial relations; and the attitudes and policies of employers, government, and middle-class reformers. We will also compare work, labor organizations, and politics concerning labor in the U.S. to the situation in other countries and explore how interpretations of American labor history have changed over the past 130 years. |
