This course examines Indian history from the vantage point of present-day concerns. Weekly themes to be investigated include nationalism, democracy, gender, caste, village and forest, religion, popular culture, urbanization, sovereignty, demographics, economic development, and the armed forces. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students should reserve Wednesday evenings, 7-10 p.m., for film viewings every week. This is mandatory. Class will NOT meet on Wednesday morning, 10:00-10:50.
This course counts toward the South Asia Studies certificate as both a Historical Inquiry course and Contemporary Society and Practice course. It may, thus, also be considered a Gateway Course for the South Asia Studies certificate. |
