HIST 353

Crosslisting:
FGSS 353 |
Course Cluster: African Studies |
In this upper-level research seminar, students will examine four books that creatively use common source materials in African history: travel accounts, missionary documents, life histories, and literature. Our major texts include: a narrative history of a slave ship voyage along the West African coast; a collection of life histories of former women slaves in East Africa; an ethnographic study of missionaries and African converts in Botswana; and a "queer" biography of a British palm oil trader and novelist in colonial Nigeria. By reading primary documents and critiques alongside these works students will gain insight into how to research and write their own research papers, while engaging major topics in modern African history. This is an excellent course for history majors and non-majors interested in conducting research in African studies. |
Essential Capabilities:
Speaking, Writing Students will write a draft of their paper and have an opportunity to discuss the progress of their writing over the semester. In addition to regular participation in discussion, students will give an oral presentation on their research project.
