This course is a detailed analysis of three important myths from classical antiquity: the stories of Prometheus, Persephone, and Dionysus. Students will examine literary and visual representations from antiquity and also consider how these myths live on in the Western tradition. |

Hesiod, THEOGONY Aeschylus, PROMETHEUS BOUND, HOMERIC HYMN TO DEMETER Euripides, BACCHAE As well as selections from numerous other ancient sources in translation, and some modern interpretive essays.

Examinations and Assignments: Several short (2 pp.) papers and a longer paper or project at the end of the term. |
