Political Independence and Literary Dependence in 19th Century Franco-Caribbean Literatures

As Haiti and Louisiana became politically independent from France in the early 19th century, Franco-Caribbean literature emerged as resolutely ambivalent towards the (former) motherland. In particular, we will explore the ways in which Francophone Caribbean authors remained loyal to France yet began to criticize its (post)colonial policies.
