The molecular mechanisms underlying the adaptive (and sometimes maladaptive) nature of brain function are beginning to be elucidated. This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the major signaling pathways involved in normal brain function and in neurological disorders. The course will initially introduce the student to the major signaling pathways in the brain, followed by their involvement in learning and memory, and neurological and psychiatric disease. Topics will include cell biology of the neuron synaptic transmission, neurotransmitters; modulation of synaptic transmission; tyrosine kinases; G-protein-coupled receptors serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, opiate receptors; cell death; and molecular mechanisms of neurological diseases.
