The molecular mechanisms underlying the adaptive (and sometimes maladaptive) nature of brain function are beginning to be elucidated. This course is designed to provide the student with a mechanistic understanding of normal and pathological brain function, and how drugs modulate neurological and psychiatric disease. Topics will include cell biology of the neuron synaptic transmission, neurotransmitters; modulation of synaptic transmission; tyrosine kinases; G-protein-coupled receptors serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, opiate receptors; cell death; and molecular mechanisms of neurological diseases. |
