This introductory course in cell biology and molecular genetics is designed for students with a substantial background in biology. All of the material and lectures of BIOL/MB&B181 will be included, and an additional two-hour meeting per week will cover related topics in considerably greater depth. Students will be exposed to the primary research science literature, develop a detailed appreciation of current methodologies used in the field, learn how to interpret various forms of experimental data to infer biological meaning, and discuss applications of modern molecular/cellular research in medicine and society. |
Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Quantitative Reasoning Students will interpret various forms of experimental data in order to infer biological meaning.
Students will analyze experimental data that is quantitative in nature, as well as apply statistical approaches, in order to understand important scientific advances in biology.

Examinations and Assignments: There will be two exams, several quizzes and homework assignments (equivalents to BIOL/MB&B 181). In addition, the honors section has one written paper, and one in-class presentation requiring an individual outside-class tutorial with faculty during the prior week. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students should have a strong interest in the Biological Sciences and a good background of coursework and/or other experience in science, such as exposure to laboratory research. |
